Nacht Café

Bahnhofsviertel / Holzstrasse, Munich

Nacht Café is one of Munich's genuine institutions. It has operated from near Maximiliansplatz for decades, opening at midnight every night of the week and staying open until 10 AM. The concept is simple: a large bar and restaurant open through the night for whoever wants to be there. The clientele is famously mixed: club refugees looking for somewhere to continue the evening, professionals finishing late shifts, journalists, musicians, and the occasional celebrity who doesn't want to be photographed doing anything unusual. The interior has a consistent fin-de-siècle feel: dark wood, leather banquettes, white-jacketed service staff. A full food menu runs through the night. The bar serves everything from beer to complex cocktails to non-alcoholic options for people who need to sober up before a morning meeting. There is no cover charge.

Full Review

Nacht Café has been described in more Munich city guides than almost any other venue. That reputation is earned. A bar that opens at midnight and runs a full restaurant service until 10 AM is genuinely unusual, and the one in Munich does it with consistent quality.

The interior is the first thing that strikes visitors: it's too well-maintained for a late-night bar. The banquettes are in good repair, the tablecloths are clean, the bar glassware is polished. This isn't an accident; the Nacht Café trades on being slightly more dignified than the hour warrants.

The crowd justifies the reputation. Between 02:00 and 05:00, you will see Munich residents who don't usually share the same spaces sitting at adjacent tables. A criminal lawyer having a Wiener Schnitzel at 3:30 AM. A jazz pianist drinking mineral water after a gig. Club refugees who started the evening somewhere fashionable and ended up here because it's the only place still serving food.

The service is one of Munich's better late-night experiences: white-jacketed, professional, and without the attitude that some prestigious bars deploy. Staff have clearly seen everything and deal with any situation calmly.

The Neighborhood

Maximiliansplatz is in central Munich near the Maxvorstadt. The Nacht Café is close to Pacha Munich and within walking distance of the Glockenbachviertel bars, making it a logical late-night continuation after club closing time.

Getting There

U-Bahn to Odeonsplatz (U3, U4, U5, U6). Walk south on Brienner Strasse to Maximiliansplatz. The Nacht Café entrance is in the area. Alternatively, taxi from anywhere in central Munich.
