Stará Pekárna
Stara Pekarna, whose name means 'old bakery,' has been Brno's most consistent live music venue for Czech and Slovak independent acts for over two decades. The building is a former bakery on Stefanikova that was converted to a music venue without losing its industrial character: exposed brick, low ceilings in the main room, and a sound system that handles the acoustic requirements of small-scale live performance without the over-engineered feel of a purpose-built venue. The capacity runs to roughly 250 standing in the main hall. The programming focuses on Czech and Slovak indie, folk, rock, and alternative acts that sit below the stadium touring circuit but above the open mic tier. Weekend shows regularly sell out. On non-show nights, it operates as a bar and occasional DJ venue for the student neighborhood. The beer is cheap, the calendar is posted reliably on the venue's website and Facebook page, and it's the best place in Brno to encounter Czech music as it actually sounds rather than as a tourist packaging. Getting tickets in advance is necessary for popular shows; the box office doesn't hold seats.

What to Expect
On a show night: a queue outside by doors time, a main hall that fills up quickly, cheap beer from a bar at the back, and a stage setup that varies with the act. The sound quality is reliably good. The crowd is students and young locals who know the Czech music scene.
Warm, communal, unpretentious. The converted-bakery character gives it an authenticity that purpose-built venues don't have. On show nights, the energy in the room is the right kind of focused.
Czech and Slovak indie, folk, alternative rock, occasional jazz or world music. Not a venue for electronic or club music in the main room.
None. Concert casual to whatever you were wearing before.
Anyone interested in Czech live music. The best non-tourist venue experience in Brno. Students, expats, and visitors who want to hear something that isn't a cover band or commercial playlist.
Cash and cards at the bar. Show tickets purchasable online by card.
Price Range
Beer 0.5L 40-50 CZK, spirits 60-80 CZK, show tickets 100-300 CZK depending on act, no cover on non-show nights
Beer ~1.50-2 EUR, show tickets ~4-12 EUR
Hours
Non-show nights: 18:00-01:00. Show nights: doors typically 19:00-19:30, show 20:00. Hours vary; check the calendar.
Insider Tip
Check the calendar on the website or Facebook before visiting. Popular shows sell out a week or more in advance; buy tickets online rather than hoping for door availability. On non-show nights, the bar is open and quiet, good for a cheaper drink than the main Veveri pubs. Arrive early on show nights to get a good standing position near the stage.
Full Review
Stara Pekarna's longevity tells you something useful. It's been operating in one form or another for over 20 years in a city that's large enough to sustain a music scene but small enough that venues live or die on local loyalty. The fact that it's still the best address for Czech indie acts in Brno means it's doing something that can't be faked.
The physical space contributes. The former bakery interior has proportions that suit live music: the ceiling height in the main hall is enough for good sound dispersion without making the room feel empty, and the brick walls absorb noise in a way that modern drywall doesn't. The sound system has been upgraded over the years without becoming an audio showcase that overshadows the acts.
The programming is the other asset. Stara Pekarna books acts from the Czech and Slovak independent circuit that you won't see in international venues: bands with 50,000 Spotify streams and 300-person hometown crowds who represent what Czech music actually sounds like. If you've come to Brno for a reason other than tourism, seeing a show here is one of the best evenings you can have in the city.
For non-show nights, the venue operates as a bar with a terrace in the warmer months. The beer is cheap and the crowd is the same student-and-local demographic as the rest of Veveri. It's a good bar in its own right, but shows are the reason to make the visit specific to this address.
One practical note: the box office is not a walk-up ticket window. Buy online in advance for any show you want to see. The venue doesn't announce sold-out status until the door, and some shows reach capacity before opening night.
The Neighborhood
Located on Stefanikova, the parallel street south of Veveri. The surrounding area is a mix of student accommodation, small restaurants, and the residential blocks that characterize the western edge of the city center. Quiet by night outside of show evenings. Easy walk from the main Veveri pub strip.
Getting There
From the Veveri tram stop (lines 6 and 9), walk one block south to Stefanikova. Two-minute walk. Alternatively, tram 1 or 2 to Stefanikova stop is a direct option from the city center.
