Mascarada
Mascarada at Ecuador 36 is Valparaiso's closest thing to a proper nightclub, occupying a ground-floor space near the Plan that holds about 300 people. The interior is dark and basic: a DJ booth, a dance floor, a bar, and colored lighting. The sound system handles the job without sophistication. Fridays lean toward electronic music with local DJs playing house and techno. Saturdays shift to a more Latin playlist: reggaeton, cumbia remixes, and pop. The crowd is university students from PUCV and UV, plus locals in their 20s who want to dance to something louder than what the cerro bars offer. Bottle service is available but rarely used. Most people drink beer and pisco at the bar. The atmosphere is unpretentious and energetic, filling a gap that Valparaiso's bohemian bars don't cover.

Full Review
Mascarada exists because Valparaiso's bar scene, as good as it is, doesn't have a proper dance venue. The cerro bars are great for drinking and conversation, but when you want to dance at 2 AM, your options are limited. Mascarada fills that gap.
The space is basic. A rectangular room with a DJ booth at one end, a bar at the other, and a dance floor in between. The lighting is standard club fare: colored LEDs and occasional strobes. The sound system is loud enough for the room without being painful. It's not going to win any design awards, but that's not the point.
Friday nights attract the electronic crowd. Local DJs play house and techno to a crowd that came specifically for that music. The vibe is less serious than Santiago's La Feria but more focused than a typical Latin club. Saturday shifts to reggaeton and cumbia, pulling a bigger, more mixed crowd that includes students who were studying all week.
The bar serves the basics fast. Beer is the default, pisco the alternative. A beer for 2,500 CLP and entry for 5,000 CLP makes this one of the cheapest nightclub experiences in Chile. The crowd is young, 18-28 mostly, and the energy is genuine. People are here to dance, and the floor shows it.
The Neighborhood
Mascarada is near the Plan, Valparaiso's flat port area. The surrounding blocks are commercial and quieter at night than the cerros. After closing, the area empties quickly. Have your Uber app ready.
Getting There
From Cerro Alegre, walk down to the Plan (10 minutes) or Uber (2,000-3,000 CLP). From the bus terminal, a taxi costs about 3,000 CLP.
