Fidel Murphy's Irish Pub
Fidel Murphy's Irish Pub sits in Queens Court Plaza on West Bay Road, combining Irish pub tradition with Caribbean location in a way that somehow works. The interior follows the template: dark wood, pub mirrors, booth seating, a long bar with draught taps, and big-screen TVs covering European football, rugby, and American sports. A pool table occupies one section. The outdoor terrace adds a Caribbean element the Irish original would lack. Capacity is roughly 100 between indoor and outdoor seating. The beer selection includes Guinness on draught (properly poured, they insist), Kilkenny, and a range of local and imported bottles. The pub grub menu covers shepherd's pie, fish and chips, and burgers alongside some Caribbean additions. What makes Fidel's work is the crowd. The expat community in Grand Cayman is large, and many of them are Irish, British, South African, or Australian professionals in the financial sector. This is where they gather. On any given weeknight, the bar has more regulars than tourists, creating an atmosphere that feels like an actual local pub rather than a themed attraction. Quiz nights, live sports broadcasts, and occasional live music provide the programming.
What to Expect
Walk through the door and you could be in Dublin, except for the temperature. Dark wood, draught taps, sports on TV, and the hum of conversation. The outdoor terrace reminds you this is the Caribbean. The crowd is a mix of accents: Irish, British, Australian, Caymanian, and American.
Authentic pub atmosphere with Caribbean warmth. Regulars and newcomers mix easily. The energy peaks during major sports events.
No regular live music. Background music is rock and pop classics. Volume increases for sports events. Occasional live Irish or acoustic acts.
Casual. Jeans, shorts, t-shirts, polo shirts. This is a pub, not a lounge.
Sports fans, expats missing a proper pub, anyone who wants a break from beach bars and tourist-oriented venues.
Cash (KYD and USD) and credit cards. Running a tab is common.

Full Review
The Irish pub abroad is usually a disappointment. Fidel Murphy's manages to avoid most of the traps. The key difference is the clientele. Grand Cayman's financial sector employs thousands of Irish, British, and other international professionals, and a significant number of them treat Fidel's as their default evening venue. This creates genuine regularity: the same faces at the same stools, the bartender knowing orders before they're placed, conversations that pick up where they left off last week.
The physical space is well-executed for the genre. Dark timber, proper pub booths, a bar that invites sitting rather than standing. The Guinness tap is prominent and the pour is taken seriously. Whether it matches a Dublin pint is debatable, but it's among the better Guinness pours in the Caribbean. The rest of the draught selection covers the basics: Kilkenny, Smithwick's, and a couple of local options.
Food is pub-standard and hits the mark. The fish and chips arrive in proper portions with mushy peas as an option. Shepherd's pie is comfort food done right. The burger is thick and cooked to order. Nothing on the menu will surprise you, and nothing will disappoint. Prices are moderate by Cayman standards.
The outdoor terrace is a nice touch. On warm evenings (which is most evenings), the combination of pub drinks and outdoor tropical air creates something neither an Irish pub nor a beach bar can achieve alone.
Sports broadcasting is a core function. The big screens run Premier League, Champions League, Six Nations rugby, NFL, and cricket at various times. Major matches transform the atmosphere: the place fills, the volume goes up, and the crowd reacts together. These are the best nights to visit if you want maximum energy.
Quiz nights are a weekly institution. Teams of 4-6 compete across general knowledge, music, sports, and local trivia rounds. The competition is genuine. Regular teams have names and rivalries. Visiting teams are welcomed and usually beaten, but the post-quiz drinks are sociable.
Compared to the beach bars and hotel lounges along Seven Mile Beach, Fidel's offers something different: a place where the alcohol is secondary to the social function. People come here for the company, the conversation, and the familiar comfort of a pub that works.
