Cafe Sofia
Cafe Sofia anchors the western edge of Praca Alexandre Albuquerque, the Plateau's main square, with a large terrace that faces the colonial-era buildings and the constant foot traffic of Praia's social center. The cafe has operated for years as the default meeting point for locals, NGO workers, journalists, and visitors who've figured out that this square is where Praia's daily social life concentrates. The space inside is modest, with a bar counter and a handful of tables, but the terrace is the real venue: two dozen tables spread across the sidewalk under shade structures, with plastic chairs that fill from late afternoon onward. The menu covers coffee, fresh tropical juices, beer, basic cocktails, and simple food. The coffee is Portuguese-style espresso. The juices are made from whatever fruit came in that morning. Beer is cold Strela at CVE 150. Nothing is expensive, nothing is fancy, and nobody pretends otherwise. The location makes it the natural spot for watching Praia go by, starting conversations with strangers, and easing into the Plateau's evening rhythm.
What to Expect
A terrace cafe on the main square with a constant flow of locals stopping for coffee, beer, or conversation. The energy is relaxed during the day and social in the evening. You'll see businessmen, students, market vendors, and tourists sharing the same space.
Open, social, and unhurried. The Plateau's living room. The kind of place where sitting alone with a coffee naturally leads to conversation with the next table.
No amplified music. The soundtrack is conversation, street noise, and occasionally a musician passing through the square.
Anything. This is a casual cafe, not a bar. Come in whatever you're wearing.
People-watchers, morning coffee, pre-dinner drinks, solo travelers looking for easy social entry to the Plateau scene
Cash preferred. Escudos. Some cards accepted but not reliably. Bring small bills.

Insider Tip
The terrace table nearest the square's corner gets the best people-watching angle. Morning coffee here is the best way to orient yourself to the Plateau. The fruit juice selection changes daily; ask what's fresh rather than reading the menu.
Full Review
Cafe Sofia is less a destination and more a starting point. Its position on Praca Alexandre Albuquerque, the Plateau's central square, makes it the natural first stop for anyone exploring Praia's social scene. The terrace faces the square's west side, catching afternoon shade and evening foot traffic in equal measure.
The physical setup is standard for a Cape Verdean cafe. A small interior with a bar counter, a display case with pastries, and a coffee machine. Outside, roughly 20 tables fill the sidewalk, each with two to four plastic chairs. A shade structure covers most of the terrace. The furniture is worn but functional.
Mornings are quiet: coffee and pastries for workers crossing the square. Afternoons pick up with students and office workers on breaks. The transition to evening begins around 5 PM when the first beers appear on tables and the conversation volume rises. By 8 PM on a Friday, finding an empty table requires luck or patience.
The menu won't surprise anyone. Coffee is CVE 100 for an espresso, served Portuguese-style in a small cup. Fresh juice at CVE 200 uses whatever tropical fruit is available: papaya, mango, passion fruit. Beer is Strela at CVE 150, served cold. Basic cocktails run CVE 300-500. Light food includes sandwiches and pasteis. Everything is affordable and straightforward.
What makes Cafe Sofia worth mentioning is its function rather than its food or drinks. This is where the Plateau's social streams converge. Government workers from the nearby ministries meet here. NGO staff from the organizations headquartered on the Plateau use it as an informal office. Tourists sit alongside locals without any separation. Conversations start because tables are close, time moves slowly, and Cape Verdeans are naturally social.
As a nightlife venue, Cafe Sofia is a warm-up act. Drinks here before dinner, dinner somewhere on Rua Serpa Pinto, then Quintal da Musica or Zero Zero Club later. It's the first link in the Plateau's evening chain.
The Neighborhood
On Praca Alexandre Albuquerque, the Plateau's main square. Rua Serpa Pinto (with Quintal da Musica and Bar Kebra Cabana) runs south from the square. Government buildings, banks, and the old cathedral are within view.
Getting There
Taxi to the Plateau, CVE 200-400 from lower Praia. The square is the first thing you'll see when arriving on the Plateau. Cafe Sofia is on the western edge, identifiable by its terrace.
