Piccolo Cafe

Gadong, Bandar Seri Begawan

Piccolo Cafe sits on a corner in the Gadong commercial district, one of the few spots in Bandar Seri Begawan that stays open past 9 PM. The interior seats around 40 people across a mix of booth seating and smaller tables, with an outdoor terrace that adds another 20 covers facing the street. The menu runs from specialty coffee and fresh juices to Western-style mains like pasta, burgers, and grilled chicken. No alcohol is served, in line with Brunei's nationwide ban. The cafe draws a mix of young professionals, families, and students who treat it as a default evening hangout. WiFi is reliable, and many customers camp out with laptops. The space is clean, air-conditioned, and plays low-volume pop music in the background.

What to Expect

A clean, modern cafe with soft lighting and a relaxed pace. You'll hear conversations in Malay and English over quiet background music. The staff are attentive without hovering. It feels like a suburban Australian cafe transplanted to Borneo.

Full Review

Piccolo occupies a well-maintained corner unit with large windows that let natural light in during the day and create a warm glow at night. The interior is standard modern cafe: white walls, wooden furniture, a few plants, and a display counter with cakes and pastries near the entrance.

The coffee is genuinely good. They pull proper espresso shots and the iced options are popular in Brunei's permanent humidity. The food menu covers enough ground to serve as a dinner option, with portions sized generously for the price. The burger is solid, the pasta is acceptable, and the grilled items are consistent.

Compared to chain options like Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in the nearby mall, Piccolo has more character and better coffee. It's a local operation that takes pride in what it serves. The trade-off is slightly slower service when the place fills up on weekend evenings.

The outdoor terrace is the real draw after dark. Gadong's streets are quiet and clean, and sitting outside with a coffee while watching the evening foot traffic is about as close to nightlife as BSB gets. It won't replace a bar experience, but for what it is, Piccolo does it well.

The Neighborhood

Piccolo sits in the Gadong commercial strip, a short walk from The Mall Gadong and the night market area. Several other cafes and restaurants are within walking distance, making it easy to combine with a night market visit.

Getting There

Taxi from the BSB city center costs BND 5-8 (about 10 minutes). No reliable public transport in the evening. Most locals drive.
