USA Visa Overview 2026
The USA uses the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) for 41 eligible nationalities (UK, all EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Brunei, Taiwan, Chile, Israel, San Marino, Andorra, Monaco, Croatia). Non-VWP nationalities need the B-1/B-2 Tourist Visa.
ESTA (Visa Waiver Program)
USD 21 per application (increased from USD 14 in August 2024). Valid for 2 years or until passport expiry. Apply online at esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Processing usually minutes; allow up to 72 hours for some applications. Mandatory for VWP nationalities entering the US for up to 90 days for tourism or business.
Required information: passport details, current address, employment information, US trip purpose, US contact, intended US address, eligibility questions (criminal history, communicable diseases, prior immigration violations). The application takes 10-20 minutes to complete.
ESTA approval is the standard outcome for travelers without red flags. Refusals require applying for a B-1/B-2 visa instead. The most common refusal causes: prior overstay on US visa, certain criminal convictions, certain disease histories, prior travel to designated countries (Iran, Iraq, Syria, North Korea, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Cuba in some cases).
B-1/B-2 Tourist Visa
USD 185 application. Up to 6 months per entry, multiple-entry, valid for varying durations (1-10 years typical). For non-VWP nationalities, or for VWP nationals who need stays longer than 90 days.
Application process: file DS-160 online, schedule interview at US embassy or consulate, attend interview with required documents (passport, photo, financial proof, employment letter, ties-to-home documentation, prior US visa history, application receipts). Interview slots can be 1-6 months in advance depending on embassy location and demand. Processing typically several weeks to several months total.
Approval rates vary significantly by embassy and applicant profile. The interview officer evaluates "intent to return" based on family ties, employment, financial situation, travel history, and demeanor.
ESTA Renewal
ESTA expires after 2 years or upon passport expiry. Renewal requires a fresh USD 21 application at esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Apply at least 72 hours before your next US trip to allow processing time. The system uses your passport details; changes to passport, address, employment, or travel purpose require a new application.
Practical Notes
The US Customs and Border Protection ESTA portal is esta.cbp.dhs.gov. The US State Department's Visa Wizard is travel.state.gov. Avoid the dozens of commercial sites (usa-esta.com, etc.) that charge USD 50-150 markups for the same ESTA process.
Overstaying an ESTA or visa results in 3-10 year bans on future US entry. The 90-day ESTA cap is firm; plan accordingly. The US tax-residency rules apply to anyone in the US 183+ days per year (with various adjustments for the "Substantial Presence Test"); long stays may trigger US tax obligations.
Note: The USA is included in this guide for completeness; the discreetgentleman.com website primarily covers nightlife and travel destinations outside the US.
