Thailand Visa Overview for 2026

Thailand has made the biggest visa-policy improvements in Southeast Asia over 2024-2025. The headline changes: the visa-exemption window extended from 30 to 60 days in July 2024, the 5-year Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) launched the same month, and the full e-visa portal rolled out to most nationalities through 2025. The combination makes Thailand the most accessible major Southeast Asian destination for long-stay visitors.

The Visa-Exemption Rule

Citizens of 93 countries (the US, UK, EU members, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, and 78 others) can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days. Free. The 60-day entry was extended from 30 days in July 2024. Extendable once for an additional 30 days at any Immigration office in Thailand for THB 1,900 (USD 55).

Practical limit: Thai immigration limits visa-exempt entries to 2 per year via land border to prevent border-running. Air entries are not strictly limited but the immigration officer can question your travel pattern. After 2 land-border entries, you'll be denied a third visa-exempt entry by land; you must enter by air or get a proper visa.

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)

Launched July 2024 specifically for digital nomads, freelancers, and remote workers. A 5-year multi-entry visa allowing 180-day stays per entry. USD 285. Requirements: proof of remote work (employment contract, freelance income proof, or business ownership outside Thailand), bank statement showing THB 500,000 (around USD 14,000), a recent photo. Apply via thaievisa.go.th or any Thai embassy. Processing 10-15 business days. The DTV includes spouse and children as accompanying visa holders for the same fee.

The DTV is the appropriate visa for remote workers whose income comes from foreign sources. Working for Thai companies or earning Thai-source income requires a separate Non-Immigrant B Visa plus work permit.

Tourist Visa (TR) for Longer Stays

If you need more than 60 days and you're not on the visa-exempt list, the Tourist Visa (TR) gives 60 days with a 30-day extension possible. USD 50 single-entry, USD 100 multiple-entry (METV). The TR has been replaced as the primary long-stay option by the DTV for remote workers, but remains useful for non-working visitors who want to spend 3+ months.

Practical Notes

Always check the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs site (mfa.go.th/en) for the current visa-exempt and visa-on-arrival country lists. The lists update frequently; the 93-country visa-exempt list expanded throughout 2024-2025 and may have changed again by 2026. The embassy URL pattern is thaiembassy.org/(country code).

Border runs (the practice of leaving Thailand briefly to reset your visa-exempt window) are heavily restricted. Air-only border runs to Vientiane (Laos), Penang (Malaysia), or Singapore work but the immigration officer can question your travel pattern. Land-border runs to Cambodia or Laos are limited to 2 per year per the 2023 immigration rules.
