Portugal Visa Overview 2026

Portugal made significant policy changes through 2022-2024. The D8 Digital Nomad Visa launched October 2022. The Golden Visa real estate route and the NHR tax regime were both abolished in October 2023. The D7 (passive income) and D8 (digital nomad) visas are the standard residency paths for remote workers and retirees.

The Schengen 90/180 Rule

Citizens of 60+ visa-free countries can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period. Free. The 90 days are cumulative across all 27 Schengen countries including Portugal.

ETIAS Coming Q4 2026

EU ETIAS scheduled for Q4 2026 rollout. EUR 7. Valid for 3 years. Apply online before travel.

D8 Digital Nomad Visa (Launched October 2022)

Portugal's flagship remote-worker visa. EUR 3,480/month income (4x Portugal's minimum wage). Foreign employer or remote-work contract; cannot work for Portuguese employer. EUR 90 visa + EUR 170 residence card. Initial 1-year visa renewable to 5 years.

The D8 is the standard path for digital nomads who want long-term Portuguese residency. Apply at Portuguese consulate or VFS Global processing center. Processing 30-60 days. The visa includes spouse and minor children.

NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) tax regime, which previously provided 10-year tax breaks for foreign-source income, was abolished for new applicants in October 2023. New D8 holders are subject to Portugal's standard tax rates.

D7 Visa (Passive Income)

Portugal's classic retirement and passive-income visa. EUR 870/month income proof from Social Security, pensions, investments, or rental income. EUR 90 visa + EUR 170 residence card. Initial 2-year visa renewable. Designed for retirees but works for anyone with regular passive income. The threshold is significantly lower than the D8's EUR 3,480/month.

Remote workers with regular income from foreign employers technically can use the D7 (treating the income as passive), but the D8 is the formally appropriate path. The D7 has been the standard expat visa in Portugal for many years; D8 launched specifically to formalize the remote-worker category.

Golden Visa Abolition

The Golden Visa real estate route (EUR 500,000+ property purchase for 5-year residency, then EU citizenship) was abolished in October 2023. Other Golden Visa investment routes technically remain available:

  • EUR 500,000 fund investment
  • EUR 500,000 business investment creating Portuguese jobs
  • EUR 1.5 million Portuguese government bonds

These are heavily reduced in popularity. The 5-year minimum stay with the Golden Visa was meant to lead to Portuguese citizenship, which still works for non-real-estate categories.

Practical Notes

Portugal's Foreign Affairs Ministry site is portaldiplomatico.mne.gov.pt. The Portuguese Immigration Service (SEF, now AIMA - Agency for Migration and Asylum) site is aima.gov.pt. The D8 visa application processes through AIMA's central office in Lisbon for the residence permit conversion.

Portugal tax-residency rules apply to anyone in Portugal 183+ days per year. The NHR regime abolition for new applicants (October 2023) is significant; consult a Portuguese tax advisor before applying. The Lisbon expat scene is large and supportive; many digital nomads use the same accounting services (around EUR 50-100/month) for tax compliance.
