Netherlands Visa Overview 2026

The Netherlands operates under the Schengen Area visa policy. The DAFT (Dutch-American Friendship Treaty) for US entrepreneurs remains one of the most accessible self-employment paths in Europe. The Highly Skilled Migrant Program is the standard knowledge-worker visa.

The Schengen 90/180 Rule

Citizens of 60+ countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Israel, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, and 50+ others) can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period. The 90 days are cumulative across all 27 Schengen countries. Free.

ETIAS Coming Q4 2026

The European Travel Information and Authorization System launches Q4 2026 (delayed from earlier targets). EUR 7. Valid for 3 years. Apply online before travel at travel-europe.europa.eu. Mandatory for Schengen entry once active. Until ETIAS launches, existing visa-free entry rules apply unchanged.

DAFT (Dutch-American Friendship Treaty)

The 1956 treaty between the US and Netherlands grants US citizens unique access to Dutch self-employment residency. Requirements: US citizenship (no other nationality qualifies), EUR 4,500 minimum business investment in a Dutch enterprise, business registration with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK), Dutch business address (rental works), EUR 350 application fee. The visa is 2 years renewable.

DAFT is one of the most accessible self-employment visa paths in Europe and is the standard route for US-citizen digital nomads who want long-term Dutch residency. Apply at the Dutch IND (Immigration and Naturalization Service); processing 2-4 weeks. After 2 years, renewable for another 5 years. After 5 years total, eligible for permanent residency.

Highly Skilled Migrant Program

The standard Dutch knowledge-worker visa. Requirements: Dutch employer sponsor, minimum salary EUR 5,331/month (around USD 5,650) for applicants 30 and older, or EUR 3,909/month (around USD 4,150) for under-30 applicants. Thresholds increased in 2024.

The visa is 5 years, renewable. Family members (spouse and minor children) can be sponsored. Fast-track processing (2-3 weeks) makes it one of the most efficient EU work-visa options. The 30 percent ruling (tax break for highly skilled migrants) provides significant income tax reductions for the first 5 years.

Schengen Visa for Non-Exempt Nationalities

EUR 90 for adults, EUR 45 for children 6-12. Apply at any Dutch embassy or consulate. Processing 15-30 business days. Requirements: completed application, passport (3+ months validity beyond visa expiry), photo, financial proof (EUR 55/day for stay duration), travel insurance (minimum EUR 30,000), accommodation booking, return flight booking.

Practical Notes

The Dutch IND site is ind.nl. The DAFT visa portal is part of IND's online services. The Dutch Foreign Office is government.nl/topics/embassies-consulates-and-other-representations. The Schengen Calculator is at home-affairs.ec.europa.eu.

The Netherlands tax-residency rules apply to anyone in the Netherlands 183+ days per year. Dutch labor law is strict; working for Dutch employers requires the appropriate visa class. Remote work for foreign employers from the Netherlands on a tourist visa or 90-day Schengen entry occupies a gray zone; the DAFT for US citizens or Highly Skilled Migrant for skilled professionals are the formal paths.
