Dominican Republic Visa Overview 2026
Dominican Republic maintains one of the easiest tourist-visa policies in the Caribbean: USD 10 tourist card (often included in airfare) for 30-day entry, extendable to 120 days from inside the country.
Tourist Card System
USD 10 fee for entry, valid for 30 days. Most major airlines flying to DR (Delta, American, United, JetBlue, Avianca) include the tourist card fee in your airfare; you receive the card upon check-in or at the gate. Otherwise pay USD 10 in cash at immigration on arrival.
Extendable from inside the country at any Migration office (Direccion General de Migracion). USD 100-200 for 60-day extension; USD 200-400 for 120-day extension. The maximum total stay on a tourist card is 120 days; beyond that requires either exiting the country or applying for a Residence Visa.
DR e-Ticket (Mandatory Pre-Arrival)
Since 2021, all international arrivals must complete the DR e-Ticket online at eticket.migracion.gob.do at least 24 hours before arrival. Free. Generates a QR code you present at immigration. The system covers entry, exit, and customs declaration combined. Required regardless of nationality or visa status.
Most travelers complete it during their flight or before boarding. The airport immigration line moves significantly slower for travelers who haven't registered.
Pensionado Visa (Retirement)
USD 1,000+ application fee. Indefinite residency. Requirements: USD 1,500/month pension from any source (Social Security, employer pension, military pension), retirement age preferred but not strictly required. The Pensionado grants:
- Indefinite renewable residency
- Tax exemption on foreign-source income for 5 years
- Exemption from import duty on personal effects up to USD 10,000
- Reduced customs duty on a vehicle import
Apply at the DR consulate in your country of citizenship or in-country at the Direccion General de Migracion. Processing 60-90 days.
Rentista Visa (Passive Income)
USD 1,000+ application fee. Indefinite residency. Requirements: USD 2,000+ monthly passive income from investments, rental income, dividends, or similar non-employment sources. Same benefits as Pensionado.
The Rentista is the standard path for non-retirees who have sufficient passive income to support DR residency. Many North American and European expats use the Rentista for retirement-style living in DR despite not being retired.

DR tax-residency rules apply to anyone in DR 183+ days per year, though the Pensionado and Rentista categories provide 5-year exemptions on foreign-source income. The Dominican peso has weakened against the US dollar in 2024-2025, making DR significantly more affordable for USD-earning remote workers.
