Colombia Visa Overview 2026

Colombia maintains its 90-day visa-free entry policy and added a Digital Nomad Visa in October 2023. The combination makes Colombia one of the most accessible Latin American countries for long-stay tourism and remote work.

The 90-Day Visa-Free Entry

Citizens of 100+ countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, EU members, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, all major Latin American nations, and many others) can enter Colombia visa-free for 90 days on arrival. Free. Requirements: valid passport, return or onward ticket, proof of sufficient funds if asked.

180-Day Extension

The 90-day visa-free entry can be extended for 90 more days at any Migracion Colombia office, for a maximum total stay of 180 days per calendar year. Apply at any Migracion Colombia office (Bogota, Medellin, Cartagena, Cali, Barranquilla, and 30+ smaller cities). Cost COP 250,000 (around USD 60). Processing 1-3 days. Required: passport, current visa stamp, application form, fee receipt.

After 180 days, you must exit Colombia for a reasonable period before re-entering for another 90-day visa-free window. Most travelers exit via short flights to Panama City, Lima, or Quito.

Colombia Digital Nomad Visa (V-Visa)

Launched October 2023. USD 684/month income (around 3x Colombian minimum wage) from a foreign employer or remote-work contract. USD 250 application. Up to 2 years initial visa. Includes spouse and minor children. Apply online at the Colombian consulate portal. Processing 30-45 days.

Required documents: passport, application form, recent photo, financial proof (3 months of bank statements or contract), employment letter or remote-work contract, criminal background check, private health insurance, Colombian address. The visa is electronic; print and present at immigration.

After 2 years, transition to a Migrant Visa (M) category for continued residency. The Digital Nomad Visa is currently the most popular Colombian visa for remote workers.

Migrant Visa (M) and Resident Visa (R)

The standard long-term residency categories. Migrant Visa (M) requires one of:

  • Investment in Colombian business or real estate (USD 70,000+ depending on category)
  • Marriage to a Colombian citizen
  • Study at a Colombian university
  • Retirement (USD 750/month pension)
  • Employment with a Colombian employer

USD 280-680 depending on category. 3 years renewable. After 5 years on the Migrant Visa, eligible for the Resident Visa (R), which provides indefinite renewable residency.

Practical Notes

The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs site is cancilleria.gov.co. The Migracion Colombia site is migracioncolombia.gov.co. Most Colombian consulates worldwide handle visa applications; the consulate in your country of citizenship is the standard application point.

Colombia tax-residency rules apply to anyone in Colombia 183+ days per year. Medellin and Bogota concentrate the largest foreign remote-worker communities; many use local accounting services for tax compliance (around USD 50-100/month). The Spanish-only requirement for many bureaucratic processes is a practical consideration; English-speaking immigration lawyers are available in Bogota and Medellin.
