Chiang Mai's Original Songkran
Chiang Mai is the cultural origin of Songkran. The Mon ethnic group's traditional New Year observance evolved into modern Songkran here. Chiang Mai retains the most traditional observances (the Buddha image parade, the rod nam dam hua elder-blessing ceremony, the morning temple visits) alongside the modern water battle.
The Old City moat (around 1.5 km on each side) becomes the most intense Songkran water battle in Thailand. Pickup trucks loaded with barrels of moat water drive around the perimeter; pedestrians soak each other from the road. The water itself is the moat water (gray with algae and dirt), which is part of the local trick. Around 500,000 participants over the three official days. The afternoon of April 14 from 13:00 to 18:00 is the peak intensity.
Tha Phae Gate Cultural Side
The official Chiang Mai Songkran ceremonies happen at Tha Phae Gate. The traditional Buddha image parade on April 13 (the Phra Buddha Sihing image is carried around the Old City for street-side water blessing). The rod nam dam hua ceremony (water-pouring blessing for elders) runs throughout the festival. The Mon-style traditional dance performances every evening. Free, no tickets needed. The cultural alternative to the moat war.
Wat Phra Singh and Temple Visits

Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phan Tao, and the other Old City temples all run parallel programming. The cultural-rich Songkran experience: 06:00 temple visit, then the moat water battle from afternoon.
Nimman Daytime Parties
The Nimman district (west of the Old City) runs daytime water parties at Backyard Cafe, Tha Sala Cafe, Aroma House, and the rooftop venues. The smaller, more contained version of the moat scene; controlled water spraying with DJs and indoor air-conditioned rooms for breaks. THB 500-1,500 cover. The crowd is mixed Thai-international with the digital nomad and longer-stay expat set.
