Prague's Two-Day NYE
Prague's New Year's Eve has a quirk that catches most travelers off-guard: the official Czech government fireworks display fires on January 1 at 18:00, not on December 31 at midnight. The display was moved from midnight in 2014 because of safety concerns with simultaneous amateur fireworks on the streets. December 31 in Prague is amateur fireworks fired from the streets and squares; January 1 at 18:00 is the official professional display from the Letenske sady embankment with Prague Castle and the Vltava in the foreground. Many travelers don't know this and skip the better display.
December 31: Old Town Crowd
The Old Town Square (Staromestske namesti) is the unofficial NYE gathering point. No formal stage, no official countdown, but the crowd fills the plaza from 22:00 to 01:30, with the Old Town Astronomical Clock at midnight and amateur fireworks fired from the streets and squares around the Old Town. The Tyn Church facade and the Old Town Hall are lit.
Police close Charles Bridge to pedestrians from 23:00 to approximately 01:00 for safety. The crowd is channeled to the river embankments on both sides. Kampa Park on the Mala Strana side and Krizovnicke namesti on the Old Town side both fill by 22:30 with viewing crowds.
Karlovy Lazne and Club Scene
Karlovy Lazne at Smetanovo nabrezi 198 is Europe's largest club: five floors, each with different music (dance pop, hip-hop, oldies, chill, EDM), open until 06:00. Cover CZK 800 to CZK 2,500 with open bar packages. The crowd is heavily international tourists; Czech locals tend to avoid Karlovy Lazne.
Other club options run more local: Cross Club (alternative warehouse industrial in Holesovice, CZK 500 to 1,500), Roxy (electronic, CZK 800 to 2,000), Lucerna Music Bar (live music in the historic Lucerna pasaz, CZK 600 to 1,500).
January 1: The Official Display
The Czech government's official New Year's fireworks display fires from the Letenske sady embankment on January 1 at 18:00 (not December 31). Free public viewing. The river embankments on both sides, the Charles Bridge (now open again), and the Prague Castle gardens all offer clear sightlines. The display runs around 15 minutes with classical music broadcast simultaneously on Czech Radio. Much better quality than the amateur December 31 streets but timed for early evening rather than midnight.
