Madrid Started the Grape Tradition
The Spanish 12-grape midnight tradition started at Puerta del Sol in 1909 when grape farmers needed to sell a surplus crop and marketed eating 12 grapes at midnight as a luck ritual. The Real Casa de Correos clock's 12 chimes became the official broadcast on Spanish TV; the plaza in Madrid remains the physical center of the country's NYE celebration. Around 250,000 people fill Puerta del Sol for the midnight chimes; the plaza closes off from 22:30 with police channeling pedestrians.
The clock chimes broadcast on Spanish national television at midnight. The whole country eats 12 grapes simultaneously, one per chime, for 12 wishes. Supermarkets sell pre-cut cans of 12 perfect grapes from December 28. Failing to swallow all 12 in time is the running family joke.
Kapital and Madrid Club Marathon
Kapital at Atocha 125 is Madrid's defining mega-club: 7 floors, each playing a different music genre (EDM on the main floor, hip-hop on floor 2, salsa on floor 3, the rooftop with house). NYE cover EUR 25 to EUR 50 with one drink. The club runs until 06:00, the standard Madrid late-club hour.
Joy Eslava at Arenal 11 is the alternative: a 19th-century theatre converted into the city's longest-running club, with royal balconies, three floors, and the polished older-crowd NYE format. EUR 30 to EUR 60 cover. Both Kapital and Joy run strict door codes; smart casual mandatory, no shorts, no athletic wear.
Fabrik, the warehouse mega-club in Humanes (south outskirts), runs a 12-hour techno marathon from 23:00 to 11:00. Tickets via Resident Advisor at EUR 45 to EUR 85. The shuttle bus from central Madrid runs from 22:30; standard for the Fabrik experience.
Malasana and Chueca Bar Streets
For the alternative scene, Malasana concentrates the indie bar street. La Via Lactea, Tupperware, El Maraton, and Plaza del Dos de Mayo's surrounding bars run NYE with free entry and drinks at EUR 4 to EUR 7. The crowd is young Madrilenos and international students. Chueca (the gay neighborhood adjacent) runs a parallel scene with bigger clubs (LL Bar, Why Not).
