Crete's Two NYE Cities
Crete's New Year's Eve runs through its three major cities (Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno) rather than the resort coastline. Most resort towns (Elounda, Hersonissos, Malia) close for the winter from November to April with only a handful of larger hotels staying open for NYE all-inclusive packages.
Heraklion's free public event at Lions Square (Plateia Eleftheriou Venizelou) is the headline NYE for Crete: a concert from 22:00 with Greek pop and traditional Cretan acts, midnight fireworks fired over the Venetian harbor, around 25,000 attendees. The crowd skews local Cretans rather than international tourists. Lions Square sits in the center of Heraklion's old town and is walkable from any harbor-area hotel.
Chania's Venetian harbor is the photo. Fireworks fired from the lighthouse breakwater at midnight, visible from the entire 1.5 km harbor promenade. The harbor-front tavernas (Tamam, Theofanis, Karnagio, Apostolis) run NYE prix-fixe menus from 21:00 to 02:00 at EUR 65 to EUR 145 per person, with vasilopita (the Greek New Year cake with the hidden coin), multi-course Cretan dinner, and sparkling wine. Book by mid-December.
Club Scene
Heraklion's club scene runs from Stone Roses (long-running rock and indie), Yacht Club (electronic and house), Privilege (the larger international club booking), and the bars around Korai Square. Covers EUR 25 to EUR 60 with one drink. Chania's scene is smaller: Talos Club, the Splantzia square bars, and the Sirio Music Bar run NYE packages from EUR 20 to EUR 50.
