Practical box

Transport
Subte (subway) shuts down at 23:00 on December 31; not a transport option for NYE. Uber and Cabify operate normally with surge pricing 2x to 4x from 23:00 to 04:00. Most Porteños drive or share taxis. The 152, 39, and 168 buses run all night.
Costs
Hotel rates around 2x off-peak; a four-star in Palermo or Recoleta runs USD 220-450 per night. Club covers ARS 25,000-80,000 (around USD 25-80). Wine bottles at a club ARS 70,000-180,000. Empanada from a kiosco ARS 1,200-1,800.
Safety on the night
Buenos Aires is safer than Rio or Salvador but pickpocketing in Microcentro and around Plaza de Mayo spikes during the NYE crowd. Stay in Palermo or Recoleta for the safest experience. Late-night taxi scams: only use Uber/Cabify or radio taxis (call directly), never street taxis after 02:00.
Dress
Hot Buenos Aires summer; 26 to 32°C overnight. Light cotton, smart casual for clubs (no shorts, no flip-flops), women's heels common, men in linen trousers and a shirt.
Ticketing
Club tables and entry through their Instagram or Resident Advisor. Dinner cruises through Tigre Delta operators directly. Restaurant NYE menus booked through the restaurant or via TheFork.

Buenos Aires Runs on a Different Clock

NYE in Buenos Aires is not a 23:00 to 01:00 event. It is a 22:00 to 07:00 event with a hard split at midnight. Until midnight is family time: a long cena en familia at home or at a parrilla, the asado fired up by 21:00, champagne at midnight, the city-wide fireworks set off from every rooftop and patio simultaneously. The streets are quiet during this window because everyone is at someone's house.

From around 01:30 onward, the city transitions. Cabs and Ubers fill up, Palermo and Recoleta come alive, and the clubs open. Most clubs do not fill until 02:30 to 03:00; the peak hour is 04:00 to 05:00. Visitors who try to start their night at 22:00 spend three hours alone in empty bars.

The Palermo Club Strip

Palermo Hollywood and Palermo Soho concentrate the international-facing nightlife. Crobar in Avenida Costanera Norte, Niceto in Palermo Hollywood (with Club 69 on Thursdays and the resident DJ rotations on NYE), Pacha Buenos Aires near the Costanera, and ICE in Costanera Norte are the big-room electronic venues. Covers run ARS 25,000 to ARS 80,000 (around USD 25 to USD 80) including one drink. Bottle service for a table of four runs ARS 350,000 to ARS 700,000 (USD 350 to USD 700) for the night.

The Palermo Soho bars (Frank's, Florería Atlántico, 878 Defensa) run packed early-evening pre-club crowds from 21:00 to 01:30 with NYE menus. After 01:30 they thin out as everyone moves to the clubs.

The Recoleta Alternative

For a less club-heavy night, Recoleta runs the rooftop bar circuit: Trade Sky Bar at the SLS, Pulitzer Hotel's roof bar, the Alvear Palace's penthouse, and Bar du Marché at the Palacio Duhau-Park Hyatt all run NYE dinner-and-drinks packages. Multi-course Argentine dinner with wine pairings, champagne at midnight, fireworks viewing from the roof. Packages run ARS 95,000 to ARS 280,000 per person (USD 95 to USD 280). Reservations open in October; the riverside-facing rooftops sell out by mid-November.

Costanera and Public Fireworks

The city's main public fireworks display fires at midnight from multiple points along the Costanera Sur. The Puerto Madero waterfront is the prime free viewing spot, with the Rio de la Plata in the background. Around 80,000 to 150,000 spectators gather there from 23:00. Pickpocketing concentrates in this crowd; phones in front pockets, no shoulder bags.

The bigger visual spectacle is the city-wide private fireworks. Every block in Palermo, Recoleta, and Caballito sets off its own; from a rooftop the entire city horizon flashes for around 20 minutes after midnight. This is the photo most people remember.

Practical Numbers for the Night

Hotel rates around 2x off-peak: USD 220 to USD 450 per night in Palermo or Recoleta. Club covers and dinner packages as listed. Ubers from Palermo to Recoleta typically ARS 18,000 to 30,000 (USD 18 to USD 30) on a surge night. Buenos Aires runs hot in late December (26 to 32°C overnight). The peso swings; checking the dolar blue rate before paying gives you the realistic USD conversion.

Where to stay in Buenos Aires during New Year's Eve

Rooms in the core event neighborhoods sell out months ahead and run double the off-peak rate. The map below shows what's still available within walking distance of the action.
