Transport
U-Bahn and S-Bahn run all night on December 31 and January 1. Tram and night buses operate parallel. Single tickets EUR 3.50 (AB zone); day ticket EUR 9.50. Most clubs are walkable from Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg, or Neukölln U-Bahn stations.

Safety on the night
Amateur fireworks on the streets are the real danger; eye and hand injuries from misfires spike sharply each year on December 31. The Brandenburg Gate event has heavy police; the Brunnenstrasse and Kreuzberg streets are unpoliced. Avoid Kottbusser Tor and Görlitzer Park after 02:00.

Berlin's Two NYE Scenes

Berlin's New Year's Eve splits between the Brandenburg Gate Party Meile (the city's official event, free, family-friendly, around 1 million attendees) and the club scene that built the city's nightlife reputation (Berghain, Watergate, Tresor, KitKatClub, ://about blank).

The Party Meile is a 2 km open-air festival from Pariser Platz at the Brandenburg Gate down the Strasse des 17. Juni to the Siegessäule. Multiple concert stages, food vendors selling Glühwein and Bratwurst, large screens for the midnight countdown broadcast live on RBB, and a midnight fireworks display from the Reichstag area. Open from 18:00, free entry, security checks at the four entry points. The crowd peaks around 800,000 to 1.2 million. The Siegessäule end is less crowded than the Brandenburg Gate end; arrive by 21:00 for a clear view.

Berghain Silvester

Berghain runs a 60-hour NYE marathon from Friday night to Monday afternoon. The single-night ticket is EUR 25 to EUR 40 on the door. The 60-hour pass is around EUR 80. There is no advance sale; entry is decided at the door by Sven Marquardt and his team. The selection is the city's most famously strict: black or dark clothing, alone or in pairs, no obvious group uniforms, no obvious tourist signaling, sober enough to walk straight, German phrasebook helpful but not required, patience for a 2 to 4 hour queue.

Around 30 to 50 percent of queue applicants get in on a normal night; lower on NYE because the demand spikes. If you're rejected, have a Plan B. Tresor (around 800 m away on Köpenicker Strasse) runs a parallel NYE marathon with comparable techno bookings and a much more relaxed door. Watergate on the Spree at Falckensteinstrasse 49 in Kreuzberg has river views from its terrace and runs a house-leaning NYE program EUR 30 to EUR 50. KitKatClub's NYE fetish night requires the club's dress code (latex, leather, lingerie, or full nudity; no street clothes).

Brunnenstrasse and the Street Party

Brunnenstrasse in Mitte, running from Rosenthaler Platz north to Bernauer Strasse, becomes an unofficial street party. Bars (Mein Haus am See, Greifbar, KingKongKlub) leave their doors open from 22:00. The streets between fill with thousands of amateur pyrotechnicians firing off mortars and Roman candles competitively from sidewalks and parked cars. This is the cinematic Berlin NYE that ends up on YouTube; it is also the source of around 1,000 eye and hand injuries reported city-wide on the night.

Restaurant NYE in Berlin

The high-end Silvester menus: Rutz (3 Michelin stars, EUR 285 with pairings), Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer (2 stars, EUR 245), Restaurant Tim Raue (EUR 195). Mid-range: Nobelhart und Schmutzig, Cookies Cream, the Volt, all around EUR 95 to EUR 145. Most restaurants close their normal menu and only run the NYE prix-fixe. Book by October.

Practical Berlin NYE Numbers
