Barcelona's New Year's Eve runs across the Magic Fountain plaza (Plaza Espana), the club triangle (Razzmatazz, Apolo, Opium), and the El Born tapas restaurants. The Spanish tradition of the 12-grape ritual at midnight (12 grapes for the 12 chimes of the bell, for 12 wishes) is universal; supermarkets sell pre-cut cans of 12 perfect grapes from December 28.
The Magic Fountain at Plaza Espana hosts the main public NYE event: light-and-water show, midnight fireworks fired from Montjuic, the 12-grape ritual broadcast on speakers, around 200,000 attendees. Free. The crowd is mixed Spanish-international. Plaza Espana itself fills by 22:30; arrive by 22:00 for a clear view. The Bunkers del Carmel (a free-access hilltop in the El Carmel neighborhood) offers a citywide panoramic alternative for the same midnight fireworks; less crowded.
Razzmatazz Five-Room Marathon
Barcelona's largest club runs a 5-room NYE marathon at Carrer dels Almogavers 122 in Poblenou. Each room runs different music: The Loft (electronic), The Pop Room (indie and pop), Lolita (Latin), Rex Room (hip-hop), and Pop Cat (rock). Tickets EUR 35 to EUR 65 via the venue's site or Resident Advisor. The most international-friendly NYE club in the city; door selection is forgiving.
Sala Apolo on Nou de la Rambla runs the alternative-rock NYE at EUR 35 to EUR 55 cover, with the Nasty Mondays-equivalent NYE night on the main floor. Opium on the Barceloneta beachfront runs the high-end beach-club Ibiza-style NYE at EUR 75 to EUR 150 cover with bottle service tables EUR 800+. The international DJ lineup typically includes names that play Pacha Ibiza in summer.
El Born Tapas NYE
The medieval El Born neighborhood concentrates the high-end NYE tapas restaurants.
