Binondo: The World's Oldest Chinatown
Binondo was founded in 1594 by the Spanish colonial government as a settlement for Catholic Chinese (Sangley) immigrants. It predates San Francisco's Chinatown (1848), Yokohama's Chukagai (1859), and every other surviving Chinatown. The Filipino-Chinese community traces 430+ years of continuous presence in this 1.5 sq km district. Chinese New Year 2026 in Binondo runs February 17 with the largest CNY parade in the Philippines.
Ongpin Street and the surrounding Binondo grid close to vehicle traffic for the 3-day peak CNY window (February 16-18). Around 800,000 attendees over the 3 days. Dragon dances along Ongpin Street, lion dances at every shrine and major shop (each shopkeeper offers red envelopes (ang pao) for the lion to receive), the Yuchengco family-sponsored fireworks at midnight on February 16. The Quan Yin Temple at Sta. Cruz Bridge runs continuous lion dances and incense offerings.
The Binondo Food Crawl
The Filipino tradition during CNY is the Binondo food crawl: starting at Eng Bee Tin for hopia (the iconic mung-bean pastry), then to Dong Bei Dumplings for hand-pulled noodles, to Quik-Snack for Chinese-Filipino lunch, to Polland Hopia for the baked-from-scratch hopia, ending at Wai Ying for dim sum. The food crawl is a 5-hour walking tour of the Binondo restaurants. PHP 1,500-3,500 per person for the full tour. Guided versions run through Old Manila Walks and Carlos Celdran's archive.
Lucky Chinatown Mall
The mall complex in Binondo runs scheduled lion dances, dragon parades, and traditional Chinese music performances throughout the CNY weekend. The air-conditioned alternative to the street crowds. Free entry. The mall stays open until 22:00 during CNY (extended from the normal 21:00).
Quezon City Alternative
If Binondo is too crowded, Banawe (Quezon City's Chinatown) runs a parallel smaller CNY event with lion dances and food stalls. Less crowded, more locally Filipino-Chinese, fewer international tourists. Banawe is 8 km from Binondo by Grab.
