North Gate Jazz Co-Op
North Gate Jazz Co-Op is a small two-floor jazz bar just outside Chang Phueak Gate on Sri Poom Road, considered by most regulars to be Chiang Mai's most beloved live-music venue. The downstairs runs as a bar with limited seating; the upstairs is the music room, with a small stage at one end, scattered seating, and standing room that fills past capacity on busy nights. The programming covers jazz, reggae, soul, blues, and the occasional Latin act, with shows starting around 9 PM and running until midnight. The Tuesday open-mic jam session is the most celebrated weekly event, drawing musicians and listeners from across the region. No cover; drinks are reasonably priced (beer 100-130 THB, simple cocktails 180-220 THB) and tipping the band 50-100 THB after sets is standard.

Full Review
North Gate Jazz sits in a small two-floor building on Sri Poom Road just outside Chang Phueak Gate. The downstairs is a basic bar with seven or eight bar stools, a short counter, and a small kitchen behind. The upstairs is the music room, accessed via a narrow staircase, with a small stage at one end, scattered chairs and benches, and standing room that fills past capacity on busy nights.
The music programming runs nightly with rotating local musicians. Tuesday is the iconic open-mic jam, when the room fills past 100 people and crowds spill onto Sri Poom Road below. The jazz, reggae, and soul sets on other nights pull smaller but committed crowds. The musicianship is consistently strong; many performers are professional touring musicians who happen to be passing through Chiang Mai. Sound is well-managed for the small space.
Compared to Boy Blues Bar on the east end of Loi Kroh, North Gate is younger, more diverse in music, and pulls a backpacker-and-local mix rather than the older expat crowd. Compared to Riverside Bar, North Gate is far smaller and more intimate, with the music as the entire focus rather than dinner-with-band programming. Within Chiang Mai's music venues, North Gate is the consensus pick for live music.
The tip jar culture is essential here. The bands rely on tips to make the night worthwhile, and 50-100 THB after a set is standard. Generous tipping often gets a song dedication or a stage callout. The bar staff are friendly with English-speaking patrons. Closing is firm at midnight under residential noise rules from the nearby temples.
