Chapitô
Chapito is a multi-level cultural space built into the hillside below the Castelo de Sao Jorge, functioning simultaneously as a bar, restaurant, circus school, and performance venue. The terrace offers one of Lisbon's most spectacular views, looking out over the rooftops, the river, and the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge. Drinks on the terrace are remarkably affordable for the setting: beers EUR 2-4, wine EUR 3-5, cocktails EUR 6-9. The restaurant serves Portuguese food at moderate prices (EUR 10-18 for mains). Below the terrace, the circus school hosts performances and events that spill into the bar's atmosphere. The building's multiple levels create distinct zones: the upper terrace for views and drinks, the middle restaurant for dining, and lower areas for performances and events. The crowd is Lisbon's creative community mixed with tourists who've discovered the view. The atmosphere is relaxed and arty, with a spontaneous quality that comes from sharing space with trapeze artists and clowns in training.
What to Expect

Full Review
Chapito defies easy categorization. It's a bar, but also a restaurant, a circus school, and a cultural venue carved into the hillside near the castle. The terrace is the headline feature, offering a sweeping view over Lisbon's eastern neighborhoods, the river, and the bridge that could charge double what it does and nobody would complain. Instead, a beer costs EUR 3 and the view comes free.
The multi-level layout rewards exploration. The upper terrace handles the view-seeking crowd, but descending through the building reveals performance spaces, art installations, and the circus school itself. On some evenings, you'll catch students practicing aerial silk routines or juggling while you drink your wine. This overlap of training and entertainment creates an atmosphere that no purpose-built bar could manufacture.
The restaurant, which occupies the middle levels, serves solid Portuguese food at prices that reflect the neighborhood rather than the view. The grilled fish is a reliable order, and the wine list favors affordable Portuguese producers. Eating here before drinks on the terrace makes for a complete evening in one location.
Chapito's main challenge is access. The hillside location means climbing steep stairs and narrow streets from any direction. The reward is proportional to the effort. Once you arrive, the combination of view, atmosphere, and price creates something that feels like a secret, even though it's been operating for decades. This is Lisbon at its best: beautiful, creative, and surprisingly affordable.
The Neighborhood
Chapito sits on Costa do Castelo, the road that wraps around the hillside below the castle. The location places it between the tourist zone of Alfama and the emerging creative neighborhood of Graca, drawing from both.
Getting There
Costa do Castelo 7, below the Castelo de Sao Jorge. Walk from Martim Moniz metro (Green line) up through the Mouraria neighborhood, or take the 28E tram toward Graca and walk downhill. Expect a steep climb from any direction. Taxis can drop you at the top of the hill near the castle entrance.
