Whyte's Bar
Whyte's Bar is an Irish-run pub that serves as the social crossroads of Lagos' backpacker scene. Pool tables, affordable pints, and a welcoming atmosphere pull in a mix of gap-year travelers, hostel dwellers, and long-term expats. Pints of lager run EUR 3-4, with Guinness at EUR 4-5. The cocktail list is basic and cheap rather than inspired. Inside, the layout splits between a bar area with stools and a back section with pool tables that see constant use. DJs or playlists provide background music that shifts from rock and indie during the afternoon to dance and pop later at night. Whyte's functions as a hub where people meet, make plans, and figure out their evening. Solo travelers find it particularly useful because the pool tables and relaxed atmosphere make starting conversations natural. The bar opens early and stays open late, functioning as an all-purpose social space from mid-afternoon drinks through to last call.

Full Review
Whyte's fills the role that every backpacker town needs: a reliable pub where you can show up alone and leave with friends. The pool tables are the social engine here. Challenge a stranger to a game, buy the loser a drink, and suddenly you have plans for the evening. It works because the atmosphere encourages it. Staff are friendly, regulars are welcoming, and nobody is too cool to talk to a newcomer.
The drinks are straightforward. Pints are poured properly, prices are fair, and the Guinness is as good as you'll get outside Ireland (the Irish owners insist on proper line maintenance). Don't order cocktails expecting creativity; that's not what Whyte's is for. The occasional pub quiz or live screening adds variety to the weekly calendar.
The crowd is a genuine mix. Gap-year backpackers sit next to retired expats who've been coming for years. Hostel workers drink alongside digital nomads. The age range and nationality spread is wider than you'd find at Three Monkeys or the party bars, and the conversations are more interesting as a result.
Whyte's works at any time of day. Afternoon pints on the terrace, early evening pool games, pre-drinks before heading out. It doesn't try to be the destination venue because it doesn't need to be. It's the connective tissue of Lagos nightlife, the place where plans form and groups assemble before scattering across the Old Town.
The Neighborhood
Whyte's is on Rua 25 de Abril, Lagos' main pedestrian street, positioning it right in the flow of foot traffic between restaurants, shops, and the other bars. It's impossible to walk through the Old Town at night without passing it.
Getting There
On Rua 25 de Abril in central Lagos Old Town. Accessible on foot from anywhere in the Old Town within 5 minutes. The bar's signage is visible from the main pedestrian street.

Other Venues in Lagos Old Town

Three Monkeys
Lagos' most famous backpacker bar with cheap drinks, a packed dance floor, and the starting point for most hostel bar crawls. Gets rowdy after midnight during summer but keeps a friendly atmosphere.

Nah Nah Bah
Cocktail bar on Rua 25 de Abril with a creative menu and a mellow vibe. The upstairs terrace is the best spot for warm evenings, and the bartenders know their craft. A step up from the backpacker bars without being pretentious.

Bon Vivant
Small craft cocktail bar near Praca Gil Eanes with exposed stone walls and a rotating menu. Pulls an older, calmer crowd than the backpacker spots. Good place to start the evening with something well-made.

Stevie Ray's Live Music Bar
Intimate live music venue hosting local and touring musicians most nights during summer. Blues, rock, and jazz dominate the lineup. The room holds maybe 60 people, so it fills quickly on weekends.
