Full Review
Hackbarth's opened in 1989, right after the Wall fell, and has been feeding and watering Mitte ever since without reinventing itself. The space is a classic Berlin Kneipe: worn wooden bar, regulars reading newspapers on stools, and an atmosphere that has not been updated because it does not need to be. It sits on Auguststrasse near the gallery district, which gives it a steady flow of post-exhibition visitors.
The menu is simple and unpretentious. Coffee EUR 2.50 to 4, beers EUR 3.50 to 5, and snacks EUR 5 to 9. The kitchen handles breakfast and light meals without attempting anything ambitious, which is exactly right for a place whose primary function is being open and welcoming. Hours run 10 AM to 4 AM Monday through Saturday, and until midnight on Sundays, making it one of Mitte's most reliable options at any hour.
Among the bars on and around Oranienburger Strasse, Hackbarth's stands out by not trying to stand out at all. Tourists gravitate toward the more visible bars closer to the Synagogue and the S-Bahn station. Hackbarth's catches the locals, the gallery workers, and the people who already know about it. The fact that it has survived over three decades in a neighborhood that reinvents itself constantly says more than any review could.
It works as a late breakfast stop before hitting the galleries along Auguststrasse, and equally well as a 2 AM fallback when other bars have closed for the night. The consistency is the point: same bar, same crowd, same reliable energy, year after year without deviation.
The Neighborhood
Hackbarth's sits on Auguststrasse in Mitte's gallery district, a street lined with contemporary art spaces that bring a steady stream of culturally engaged visitors. The bar predates most of the galleries and has watched the neighborhood transform around it.

S-Bahn to Oranienburger Strasse station, then a three-minute walk east along Auguststrasse into the gallery district. U-Bahn Weinmeisterstrasse on Line U8 is equally close from the other direction.

Speakeasy-style cocktail bar hidden behind an unmarked steel door beneath the S-Bahn railway bridge. The interior mixes raw concrete with contemporary art, and DJs spin on weekends.

Basement venue in a converted cellar hosting live bands, open mic nights, and DJ sets. The ground-floor bar serves cheap drinks to a mixed crowd of locals and visitors.

German and international craft beer bar with a rotating selection of over 20 taps. The relaxed atmosphere draws a crowd that takes their beer seriously without being snobby about it.
