Traps Bar
Traps Bar is Suva's most established nightlife venue, occupying a two-story building on Victoria Parade in the heart of downtown. The ground floor operates as a standard bar with a long counter, table seating for around 60 people, and a pool table that draws a steady crowd. Upstairs opens on weekends with a small dance floor, DJ booth, and additional bar service. The decor is functional rather than stylish, with wood paneling and sports memorabilia on the walls. Capacity is roughly 150 across both levels. The crowd mixes local professionals, university students from USP, and the regular expat contingent. Traps has survived multiple economic downturns and political upheavals in Fiji, making it something of an institution on the Victoria Parade strip.
What to Expect
Walk in through a simple doorway off Victoria Parade into a dimly lit bar with music playing at conversation level. The ground floor feels like a local pub anywhere in the Pacific. On weekends after 10 PM, the upstairs transforms into a sweaty dance floor with the DJ pushing Pacific pop, dancehall, and R&B.
Relaxed downstairs, energetic upstairs on weekends. The kind of place where strangers share a table without awkwardness.
Pacific island pop, reggae, R&B, dancehall, and occasional live bands on weekends
Casual. Jeans or clean shorts with a collared shirt is the standard. No one dresses up for Traps.
Anyone looking for Suva's most reliable night out. First-timers to the city should start here to get a read on the local scene.
Cash (Fiji dollars) preferred. Cards accepted but service is slower.

Full Review
Traps sits right on Victoria Parade, impossible to miss if you're walking the strip. The entrance opens into a ground floor bar that hasn't changed much in years. Dark wood, a few TVs showing rugby or cricket, and a bar counter where the bartenders know the regulars by name. The pool table in the back corner generates its own social ecosystem; winning gets you the next game, and the unwritten rule is that you buy the loser a beer.
Upstairs is where Traps earns its nightlife reputation. The space is compact, maybe 200 square meters, with a small stage area for the DJ or live acts. On Friday and Saturday nights after 10 PM, this room fills to capacity. The DJ runs through Pacific pop hits, some reggae, R&B from the 2000s, and whatever's trending on Fiji radio. The dance floor gets crowded enough that you'll be shoulder to shoulder by midnight.
The crowd splits roughly three ways: young Fijians out for the weekend, USP students (who add a pan-Pacific flavor, with Tongans, Samoans, and other islanders in the mix), and expats from the various embassies and NGOs based in Suva. This mix is what makes Traps work. It's the one venue where all of Suva's social circles overlap.
Drink prices are fair. Local beer is the value play at FJD 8. The cocktail menu is basic; don't expect craft mixology. Rum and coke or vodka and juice are the safe orders. Service slows down significantly after 11 PM when the upstairs bar gets slammed.
The Neighborhood
Traps sits on Victoria Parade within walking distance of the Holiday Inn and most downtown hotels. The surrounding block has a few food options for late-night eating, though choices thin out after midnight. The taxi rank near the Municipal Market is a 5-minute walk.
Getting There
Walk along Victoria Parade from any downtown hotel. From the Holiday Inn, it's about a 10-minute walk east. Taxis from anywhere in greater Suva cost FJD 5-15 depending on distance.
