Gemmayzeh & Mar Mikhael, Beirut

Internazionale is a compact neighborhood bar on Armenia Street that has earned a loyal following through consistently good cocktails and an unpretentious attitude. The space is small, maybe 40 seats inside plus a handful of sidewalk tables. The interior features a long bar counter, exposed stone walls, and shelving stacked with spirits. The cocktail program is serious without being precious, run by bartenders who know their classics and improvise well. An Italian-influenced snack menu provides bar food ranging from bruschetta to small pasta dishes ($5-10). The crowd skews local, predominantly Mar Mikhael regulars and people who work in creative industries. Tourist numbers are low because the venue doesn't market itself aggressively. It relies on word of mouth and repeat visits. Evening energy builds from 8 PM onward, peaking around 11 PM on weekends. The bar doesn't try to be a late-night destination. Most people come for the 8-to-midnight window, then move to larger venues or clubs.

What to Expect

A small, well-lit bar with people packed close together. The bartender is probably making something by hand. Italian snacks sit on plates along the counter. Someone's speaking French at one end of the bar and Arabic at the other. The music is present but not dominant. It feels like a neighborhood spot in Rome or Barcelona transplanted to Beirut.

Atmosphere

Intimate, warm, and conversational. The small space forces proximity, which creates natural interaction between groups.

Music

Jazz, bossa nova, and Italian pop. Vinyl-centric playlist kept at conversational volume.

Dress Code

Casual. Clean and put-together, but nothing formal. The bar's the size of a living room and dresses accordingly.

Full Review

Internazionale does one thing and does it well: serve good drinks in a comfortable room. The space is tiny enough that three groups of four would fill it completely. The bar counter is where the action happens, with the bartender working directly in front of you, explaining what they're making if you're interested.

The Italian influence shows in both the drink menu and the food. Negroni variations are a strength. The snack menu includes genuine Italian charcuterie and bruschetta that would pass quality checks in a Roman enoteca. The prices are reasonable by Beirut standards, with most cocktails landing at $9-11.

What sets Internazionale apart from the flashier bars on Armenia Street is its regulars. This is a neighborhood bar that happens to make excellent cocktails. The people sitting next to you are likely here twice a week. They know the bartender's name, they have a usual drink, and they're generally open to conversation with newcomers.

The venue doesn't work for groups larger than four. There's simply not enough space. It also doesn't work if you want loud music, dancing, or a scene. Come here for the 7-to-11 PM window when you want quality drinks and adult conversation before heading somewhere louder.

The Neighborhood

Central Armenia Street location puts it within a one-minute walk of Torino Express, The Garten, and multiple other bars. It's a natural stop on a Mar Mikhael bar crawl.
