Cuba Libre

Clarke Quay, Singapore

Cuba Libre brings Latin energy to Clarke Quay from its spot in Block 3B along the Singapore River. The two-story venue combines a ground-floor restaurant and bar with an upper level that opens up for dancing on weekend nights. The interior leans into the Havana theme with exposed brick, ceiling fans, vintage Cuban posters, and a long mahogany bar. The rum selection is the star, with over 80 varieties ranging from everyday Havana Club to rare aged Diplomatico and Ron Zacapa bottlings. Salsa and bachata nights run on scheduled evenings, with live instructors offering free beginner lessons before the floor opens to general dancing. The restaurant side serves Cuban-inspired food, including ropa vieja, empanadas, and mojitos that the bartenders crank out at impressive speed. Capacity runs to about 250 across both floors.

The free salsa lessons on scheduled nights are genuinely fun, even for beginners. Show up 30 minutes before the lesson starts to get a spot. The bartenders make some of the best mojitos in Clarke Quay. Ask for the aged rum version if you want something with more depth.

Full Review

Cuba Libre occupies a unique position in Clarke Quay by offering something no other venue in the district does: a genuine Latin dance and drinking experience. The salsa nights draw a mix of regulars who can actually dance and beginners who showed up because someone told them about the free lessons. Both groups coexist surprisingly well, with the experienced dancers usually happy to partner with newcomers.

The rum program is taken seriously. The bartenders know their way around the collection, and the mojitos are made properly with fresh mint, lime, and cane sugar rather than premixed syrups. Ordering beyond the standard mojito reveals the bar's depth. A daiquiri made with 7-year Havana Club at SGD 24 is one of the better cocktail values in Clarke Quay.

The food deserves mention. The ropa vieja and black bean dishes are solid, and serving real meals gives Cuba Libre an advantage as a full-evening destination rather than just a bar stop. Having dinner here before the dance floor opens means you're already settled in when the energy picks up.

The two-floor layout works to separate dining from dancing, though sound carries between levels. Weekend nights see the upper floor fill with dancers while the ground floor maintains a more conversational bar atmosphere. Compared to the purely club-oriented venues nearby, Cuba Libre offers variety within a single venue.
